Werdenberg Castle
The story of knights, counts and foreign bailiffs and a burgher family.
Merlons, keep and lucids, palace, kennel and courtyard, roof trusses and vaults - the builders have left their personal structural traces on Werdenberg Castle. Built as a typical castle of the High Middle Ages to secure the passage to Toggenburg, the castle became the administrative site of the bailiwick under the Glarns. Established as a bourgeois residence during the Romantic period, it has recently been transformed into a cultural castle. And as a museum representing all epochs of 800 years of social history, the imposing building itself now stands vividly in the center.
