Lucerne – St.Gallen section

The green hills and gentler mountain landscapes here, so often overshadowed by the towering peaks, also have their charm. The Voralpen Express runs between Lucerne and St.Gallen. It starts at Lake Lucerne, with its famous panoramic view of the Alps of Central Switzerland. The Voralpen Express crosses Lake Zurich and passes Rapperswil, the town of roses. On the approach to St.Gallen, you will see another notable sight: the Sitter Viaduct. At 99 metres, it is the highest railway bridge in Switzerland. Once in St.Gallen, you can visit the historic Abbey District, which has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1983.

St.Gallen – Schaffhausen – Zurich section

This section of the route runs from the historic textile city of St.Gallen through a rural hilly landscape towards Lake Constance and then along its shore for 40 kilometres. The route then follows the Rhine down to Schaffhausen and its famous landmark, the Munot Fortress. Schaffhausen is also famous worldwide as the location of the Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall. You can get a spectacular view of the falls from the train. After crossing the magnificent railway bridge at Eglisau, the train comes to the financial centre of Zurich.
