Family Route
A cycling experience by Lake Constance and the Rhine
The Family Route has six sections that run between Bad Ragaz and Schaffhausen. They first follow the Rhine and then Lake Constance. The whole route is very safe and mostly flat. The family route is suitable even for children with little cycling experience. Worried about running out of steam? Don’t be. There are plenty of stopping places – and train stations – along the way. The Thurbo trains are all easy-access with no step up onto the train, so you can even roll bike trailers on and off the train easily.
Altstätten-Arbon section
The third section of the Family Route begins in Altstätten. It is mostly flat, which makes it particularly suitable for all age groups. It takes you past open-air swimming pools and idyllic farms along the Rhine Valley to Au. From this point on, the route follows the scenic banks of the Rhine. Then, at St. Margrethen, you’ll even veer into Austria for a bit! Then it’s onwards through the Rhine Delta nature reserve and past the airport to Altenrhein. As it traces the shoreline of Lake Constance, the route passes through the charming harbour town of Rorschach before ending in Arbon. This is a variety-packed, family-friendly cycling adventure featuring spectacular landscapes, fantastic playgrounds, refreshing open-air pools and various cultural attractions.
