Description of the UNESCO Tour route

Starting from Schaffhausen, drive along the shore of Lake Constance in the direction of Lindau/Meersburg. After a few kilometres you will reach Unteruhldingen. In June 2011, UNESCO recognised a total of 111 pile-dwelling sites across six Alpine countries as a single, cross-border World Heritage site under the name “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps”. Some of these dwellings are in Unteruhldingen. The Pfahlbaumuseum (Pile Dwelling Museum) provides unique insight into the world of the farmers who once made their living with agriculture and animal husbandry here. It’s definitely worth a visit!

The ferry crosses Lake Constance, connecting Germany with Switzerland, and arrives in Romanshorn half an hour later. The next stop is Arbon, a charming resort town by the lake. It has many attractions, including a historic old town, a wide range of shopping options, and plenty of pleasant walks and cycle paths. The tour continues through the Canton of Thurgau, past lush meadows and fruit trees, and back to St.Gallen.

The best of the UNESCO Tour

The exquisite architecture, including the baroque cathedral, and the impressive collec-tion of original manuscripts make the Abbey District a cultural treasure trove. It was rightly designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1983.
Pile dwellings are houses on stilts – archaeological remains found in wet environments. The lake bed of Lake Constance still contains the remains of prehistoric settlements that once stood on stilts in shallow water here.
The island of Reichenau in Lake Constance was made a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in the year 2000. This amazing island bears witness to the religious and cultu-ral roles played by the large Benedictine monastery that stood there in the Middle Ages.
