Whether you're looking for a quick break from your daily routine or a leisurely stroll, the natural beauty of the Three Ponds is the perfect spot for a relaxing walk at any time of year. Three varied routes wind their way through this green oasis. Starting in St.Gallen’s old town, the Mülenenschlucht Trail follows the roaring Steinach river through shady greenery and leads all the way up to St.Georgen. Once you reach the top, short and long circular walks invite you to explore the area around the Three Ponds. The well-signposted paths make it easy to find your way, leading to the most beautiful viewpoints overlooking the city and Lake Constance. Clear signage ensures visitors can easily find their way and fully enjoy the natural surroundings.

Swimming & relaxing
They were artificially created in the 17th century to provide a water supply for textile bleaching and for the fire service. Soon afterwards, the residents of St.Gallen also started using them for swimming and relaxation, but at that time it was strictly segregated by gender, which is why they are known as the «Manne- and Buebeweier» and the «Frauen- und Familienbadi». While the Mannenweier and Frauenweier are now popular bathing spots, the Buebenweier is not suitable for swimming. The area is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful natural swimming spots and enchants visitors with its Art Nouveau bathing houses, which serve as a reminder of St.Gallen’s textile history. Whether you're swimming, relaxing, or simply dangling your feet in the water, the Three Ponds offer an idyllic place to cool off, high above the rooftops of St.Gallen.

Mülenen canyon
The Mülenen canyon, a hidden natural paradise located right in the heart of St.Gallen, directly below the Drei Weieren, is a real adventure for those keen to explore. A narrow path winds along the roaring River Steinach through a wild and romantic canyon, featuring moss-covered rocks, small waterfalls, and ancient trees. On hot days in particular, the cool, damp atmosphere provides welcome relief. The canyon offers respite not only to those suffering from the heat, but also to those seeking strength. Some believe that a special energy radiates from this spot across the whole city – after all, it is no coincidence that Saint Gallus is said to have founded his hermitage here. According to legend, he even tamed a bear, as depicted in the 1955 sgraffito at the entrance to the canyon. Keen walkers can use the canyon as an exciting alternative to the classic climb up to the Three Ponds – a genuine nature experience right in the heart of St.Gallen!

Mühleggbahn funicular
The Mühleggbahn funicular is St.Gallen’s historic funicular railway, having connected the old town with the Three Ponds recreational area since 1893. In just 90 seconds, it ascends the steep route from the valley station to the St.Georgen district. Once powered by water, the funicular now runs on electricity, but it remains a charming relic of times gone by. It is the most convenient alternative to the steep climb for walkers, bathers and locals alike, and a small but delightful attraction with a touch of nostalgia.
