The Kirchhofer House of the University of St.Gallen

The Kirchhofer Haus embodies the close connection between the textile origins of the University of St.Gallen and the link between business and science that is still active today.
History:
Colonel Paul Kirchhofer (1825-1903) was a St.Gallen textile entrepreneur, partner in the “Vonwiller” embroidery and export company, politician, patron and benefactor. He acquired the property in 1869 and redesigned it in an impressive international style.
The Kirchhofer family, who later donated the property to the town, showed foresight in promoting youth, education and culture through their generous patronage. In memory of the former owner, Colonel Paul Kirchhofer, the property was given the name Kirchhofergut.
Architecture:
The Kirchhofergut extends over 27,393 square meters and is home to various buildings as well as the imposing farm building in English country house style as a highlight. The Kirchhofer house, probably built in the 17th century in half-timbered construction, stands on the northern hillside of the city of St.Gallen. Paul Kirchhofer incorporated the Swiss house style to make his farmhouse presentable.
Current use:
Since 1963, the Kirchhofergut has been the seat of the university, which was founded in 1898. With the construction of the main building of the University of St.Gallen on the site of the former Magniberg estate, the location has developed from an idyllic park with orchards and gardens into an international “think-tank” where the fruits of intellectual labor are harvested. The Kirchhofer Haus, which did not have to make way for the new buildings, is carefully maintained in memory of the founders.
