Karlstor

Karlstor
The last preserved city gate of St.Gallen
In 1566 the monastery of St.Gallen was separated from the city by a wall. So in 1570 the abbot had a separate gate built for the monastery. This has been preserved until today. The large stone relief that adorns the eastern facade is the most striking feature of the gate. In the upper part, besides the coat of arms of the Pope of that time, the coat of arms of the old German Empire is carved into the stone. The middle part shows the coat of arms of Otmar, the first abbot and founder of the monastery. Also visible is Gallus - patron saint of the city - with the bear. At the very bottom, two lying lions and united intertwined bands decorate the relief. Today the Karlstor houses the remand prison. The building belongs to the cantonal administration.
