Gaststuben zum Schlössli

Gaststuben zum Schlössli
The historic Zollikofersche Schlössli at the Spisertor is a social center of the city of St.Gallen.
The hosts have dedicated themselves heart and soul to the challenge of making products and specialties from the region presentable. Ingredients for real gourmets are found at selected farmers, wine presses, cheesemakers and butchers. From these, dishes with a classical or traditional background are created. Handcrafted and lovingly made by the staff. The stay in the Schössli becomes a pleasure for all senses. This is St.Gallen hospitality in action. History: Built between 1586 and 1590 by Laurenz Zollikofer, a grandson of Vadian, the Schlössli is the most stately private house within the old town of St.Gallen. The Zollikofer family already owned several castles outside the city and now wanted to build an impressive residence within the city walls as well. The Schlössli served the purpose of social representation, so it was important to have ballrooms where guests could be entertained. In addition, the Schlössli was also a trading house: a warehouse was set up on the first floor. After Laurenz Zollikofer's death, the Schlössli remained in the family for another generation, and later passed to other wealthy St. Gallen families, including Hochreutener, Kunkler and Schlumpf. In the 19th century, the city would have had the chance to acquire the Schlössli. Johannes Kaspar Straub offered it to the school board for 17000 gulden. However, the deal did not materialize because the necessary funds were not raised - as the town had hoped - from voluntary contributions by wealthy and charitable townspeople. Thus the Schlössli remained in private ownership.
