Former embroidery factory Iklé-Frères AG

Former embroidery factory Iklé-Frères AG
The embroidery factory of Iklé-Frères AG was one of the most important companies in the former municipality of Straubenzell. The first Schiffli embroidery machines in eastern Switzerland were also in operation here.
History: The company Iklé-Frères AG operated an embroidery factory on this site from 1880 and set up the first embroidery factory in Eastern Switzerland here. This factory was supplemented in 1901 by the building at Feldlistrasse 31 and replaced in 1906 by number 31a. The new buildings were designed by the architect Wendelin Heene. During the crisis in the embroidery industry, Iklé-Frères AG closed its production facilities. From the 1920s, building no. 30 housed a mechanical workshop and a car repair shop, among other things. Various companies also operated at Feldlistrasse 31a over the years, including Forma Vitrum, which produced glassware for medical and chemical purposes from 1930. Architecture: The long, rectangular buildings form an ensemble: No. 31 is two-storey with a raised central risalit and hipped roof; No. 31a is four-storey with a flat roof. Both buildings are divided by vertical red exposed brick pilaster strips and have large windows in keeping with their original function. The building from 1906 looks extremely modern for its time. Current use: Today, the buildings are used for a wide variety of purposes, primarily by architectural firms, design studios, communication companies and similar businesses.
