City park St.Gallen
The park is an oasis of tranquillity in the midst of the urban hustle and bustle located between the Kunstmuseum (Art Museum) and the Historisches und Völkerkundemuseum (Historical Museum and the Museum of Ethnology).
The Stadtpark , or city park, which covers 33,737 m² is the largest green space in the city centre and used to be the garden for the house at Rorschacher Strasse 25 (today a music school) which was owned by the Scherrer family.
The first fundamental change to the Stadtpark occurred in 1880 when the museum was built. In 1877, the Botanical Garden was laid out in strict basic forms on the east side of the park. The Aviary Society, founded in 1879, commissioned construction of an octagonal enclosure in 1892. To this day all kinds of birds live here and delight visitors and residents with their chirping.
The new municipal theatre was built in the Stadtpark following a competition in 1968.
