Mülenen canyon

The Mülenen canyon is a narrow gorge south of the old town of St.Gallen.
Legend has it that Saint Gallus stumbled at the bottom of the valley and fell into the thorns. He saw this as a divine sign and built his hermit cell here. This later developed into the monastery of St.Gallen and, centuries later, the town of St.Gallen. Today, the “valley station” for the Mühleggbahn, a funicular railroad that leads up to St.Georgen, is located here. The Mülenen Gorge can also be explored on foot. The wild and romantic path leads over small bridges and past the roaring Steinach.
