Mülenen canyon

The Mülenen canyon is a narrow gorge south of the old town of St.Gallen.
At the bottom of the valley - according to legend - St. Gallus tripped and fell into the thorns.
He saw this as a divine sign and built his hermit cell here. This later developed into the monastery of St.Gallen and centuries later the city of St.Gallen grew out of it.
Today, the "valley station" for the Mühleggbahn, a rack railroad that leads up to St.Georgen, stands on this spot. The Mülenen Gorge can also be explored on foot. The wildly romantic path leads over small bridges and past the roaring Steinach.
