Former finishing plant

Former finishing plant
Throughout the 19th Century, the Mülenenschlucht became increasingly industrialised. The building at Mühlensteg 8 served as a finishing works and bleaching house for refining fabrics.
History: The exact year of construction of the building is unknown, but it has appeared on city maps since 1860. It was originally one of several factories belonging to Niklaus Messmer's finishing department. After him, the companies “Weniger & Scheitlin” (1889), “Erwin Grüebler” (1891), “Bächtiger & Wartmann” (1903) and “Bächtiger & Co.” (1916) operated a finishing shop, which was temporarily connected to a bleach works. A characteristic change in function took place in 1932, when the factory no longer served the struggling textile industry, but became Josef Albert Lüthi's car repair workshop. Architecture: The four-storey core building with gable corresponds to the factory architecture of its time. The entrance is located at the north-west corner and is set back. The base floor still has the character of a workshop. A three-storey extension extends to the east and extends the building. Current use: The property is currently used for residential purposes.
