Hiking map

Hiking trails in Switzerland are divided into three different trail categories, which can be identified by their signalization. As a rule, each trail is assigned to one of the categories «hiking trail», «mountain hiking trail» or «alpine hiking trail». The indication of the trail category by coloring the signposts and intermediate markings gives hikers an idea of the demands and difficulties or dangers of a trail.

Hiking trails (yellow) often run along wide paths. However, they can also be narrow and uneven. Aside from ordinary attention and caution, hiking trails do not place particular demands on hikers. Recommended: Shoes with a grippy sole.

Mountain hiking trails (white-red-white) partly open up impassable terrain and are mostly steep, narrow and partially exposed. Mountain hikers must be sure-footed, free from vertigo and in good physical condition as well as be aware of the dangers in the mountains. Sturdy shoes with a grippy sole are necessary.

Alpine hiking trails (white-blue-white) lead partly through pathless terrain, over snowfields, glaciers or scree slopes and through rock with short climbing sections, partly pathless. Alpine hikers must be sure-footed, free from vertigo and in very good physical condition, as well as being very familiar with the dangers in the mountains. Additional equipment such as compass, rope, ice axe or crampons may be necessary.
