Partial sections from and to St.Gallen

Lucerne – St.Gallen

The green hills and gently rolling mountain landscapes that set the scene in front of the high mountain peaks also have their charm. The Voralpen-Express train runs between Lucerne and St.Gallen. It starts on Lake Lucerne with a magnificent panorama of the Alps in Central Switzerland. The Voralpen-Express train crosses Lake Zurich and passes Rapperswil, known as the city of roses. Another highlight follows just before arriving in St.Gallen: the Sitter Viaduct. At 99 metres high, it is the highest railway bridge in Switzerland. Once in St.Gallen, the historic Abbey District, which has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1983, awaits.

St.Gallen – Schaffhausen – Zurich

This stage of the tour goes from the historic textile city of St.Gallen through rural hilly landscape towards Lake Constance and then 40 kilometres along its shores. It then winds down the Rhine River to Schaffhausen with the Munot Fortress as its landmark. Schaffhausen is also world-famous for having the largest waterfall in Europe: the Rhine Falls, which is a wonderful sight to see from the train. After the majestic railway bridge of Eglisau, the train soon reaches the financial metropolis of Zurich.
