Getaway to the wine and hiking paradise

One of the most beautiful hiking regions and holiday resorts in Switzerland is the St.Gallen Rhine Valley. The region, located about 700 metres above sea level, is one of the higher-lying regions in Eastern Switzerland and beckons visitors with its fantastic valley location nestled between Lake Constance, Sargans and Altenrhein. With its special geography, abundance of cultural events and impressive lush vineyards, the St.Gallen Rhine Valley is a true destination for hikers, wine lovers and connoisseurs.

Excursion paradise in rural surroundings

Innovative wine specialities combined with tradition

The award-winning Rhine Valley wines are not only known regionally, they are also popular nationally and internationally. The winegrowers are deservedly proud of this accomplishment. 25 of them have joined together to form the Rhine Valley Wine Association. The aim is to work together, to learn from one other and to develop new and exquisite wines. The Rhine Valley Wine Association combines innovation with the long tradition of winegrowing in the four countries that intersect in the Rhine Valley. For a fruitful future – like the sloping vineyards of the Rhine Valley.

Invigorating hikes with a spectacular panorama

Hiking along the carefully designed paths and hiking trails is a real experience. In addition to the standard forest and meadow hikes, nature lovers can look forward to an individual and tailor-made hiking holiday. It offers routes along the Rhine River to Lake Constance or thrilling panoramas on the steep trail to the Kyburg Castle. The Rheintaler Höhenweg, a trail running along the top of the Rhine Valley, gives guests a bird’s eye view of the wine-growing region. A trail consisting of six stages connects the small harbour town of Rorschach on Lake Constance with the historic Rhine Valley village of Sargans. The sections of the trail mostly lead high above the valley through vineyards, apple orchards and protected high moors, past majestic castles, palaces and inns. In good weather, there are wonderful views of the valley plain, Lake Constance and the Austrian and Liechtenstein mountain peaks.

The many wine trails throughout the Rhine Valley are a good way to learn about the exquisite wines from the region. Hikers learn exciting and interesting facts about grape-growing and wine-making at the vineyards along the three-and-a-half kilometre long Rheintaler Weinwanderweg (Rhine Valley Wine Trail). With plenty of opportunities to sample the different wines along the way. An experience to savour. Especially when the wine is served in Bernecker glasses – the village has a glass-blowing studio called the “Büdeli Berneck”, where anyone who’s interested can learn about what lies behind the traditional handicraft.

The Rebkulturweg Thal (Thal Vineyard Trail) is slightly shorter and particularly suitable for families with children. In addition to information boards with historical facts and current information about winegrowing, there are exciting stories to read and tricky puzzles to solve.

The US government also loves Rhine Valley wines

One Rhine Valley wine has attracted international attention. As part of its «SWISS Taste of Switzerland» programme, Swiss Air is serving wine from the tobias wein.gut. winery to its Business Class customers for the second year in a row. The various Swiss wine regions including Eastern Switzerland are featured in the «SWISS Taste of Switzerland» programme. After a multi-phase evaluation and professional tasting by SWISS, tobias wein.gut. was awarded the contract to supply the airline with its wine. Incidentally, the US government has already ordered selected red and white Rhine Valley wines for an event at the 2018 WEF in Davos.
