St.Laurenzen church

The church of St.Laurenzen is the most important church in the city, second only to the cathedral, and is the centre of the reformation in St.Gallen.

The protestant Church of St.Gallen, converted during the Reformation, bears witness to history. It is protected as a historical landmark and is considered a monument of national importance. Today's neo-Gothic church was built between 1850 and 1854 based on plans by Johann Georg Müller. It was extensively restored between 1969 and 1973. It was the popular “church of the commoners” for several centuries. Municipal meetings were held here in the past and still are to the present day. During the Reformation, St.Laurenzen became the main church of Protestant citizens.

From the tower, visitors have a breathtaking view of the city and the Abbey District.
