Abbey district of St.Gallen

Abbey district of St.Gallen

Timeless, unique, inspiring.

The foundation stone of the abbey was laid in 612 by the Irish wandering monk Gallus. In 719 the prince abbey of St.Gallen was founded and abolished in 1805. In this more than 1000-year history, the monastery with the Abbey District was one of the spiritual centers of Europe and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.

Today, the Abbey District is still a place steeped in history. In addition to one of the most beautiful Baroque libraries in the world, the oldest monastery plan of its kind is open to the public.

Attractive exhibitions in the Abbey Library, the vaulted cellar and the exhibition hall present the unique treasure of manuscripts, documents and prints.

Public and private guided tours by experts convey history on a personal level. And for families, the puzzle fun provides a playful approach to the world of the monastery.
