Former building of Christian Fischbacher Co. AG

Christian Fischbacher has been designing luxurious, qualitatively and aesthetically exceptional textiles for 200 years. During that time, the Swiss family business based in St. Gallen has developed into a globally active provider of the finest furnishing fabrics, bedlinen, home accessories, carpets, towels, pillows and duvets.

History:
Born a farmer’s son in St. Peterzell in 1803, Christian Fischbacher founded the eponymous company at the age of just 16. He bought the woven materials from farmers’ wives in the region and carried them on foot to the market in St. Gallen, 30km away. From the 1830s, Christian Fischbacher bought his own yarn and used a domestic putting-out system to have textiles woven at home. In the 1940s, several subsidiaries were founded first in the US, and later also in Europe and Asia. In the 1960s, ties were made to Parisian Haute Couture. After the 1980s, the focus shifted back to home textiles.

Architecture:
In 1854, Christian Fischbacher moved to Oberer Graben 24 in St.Gallen. In the 1870s, he – together with his sons, who by then also worked in the family business – moved his home and company seat to Vadianstrasse 6/8. The building was designed by the architects Lorenz & Wild as both a family home and the premises for the company Christian Fischbacher. One of the architects – Reinhard Lorenz – designed several other important buildings in the city, for example the late neoclassical villa at Blumenaustrasse 26 (“Villa Landhaus”) or the palazzo-like building at St.Leonhardstrasse 15 which served as the city hall from 1877 to 1928.

Present-day use:
In 1984, a new building for the business was built at Mövenstrasse 18 in St. Gallen-Winkeln. Thanks to its generous size, all the warehouses could be combined under one roof. Today, the Christian Fischbacher Co. AG is a global company with branches in Germany, Japan, France, the Netherlands and Italy. To this day it is run by members of the Fischbacher family – by now, the sixth generation. Vadianstrasse 6 now houses the city’s Agency for Environment and Energy as well as the Energieagentur St. Gallen GmbH.
